The 4L60E transmission is the direct descendent of the R4, and as such already had over a decade of refinement put into it before it ever even made it into production.

This means that even the early ones were pretty good from day one of their production life. While there have been many case changes and internal changes throughout the years.

Ok, time to stop rambling. Lets get into 4L60E problems and how to troubleshoot them. It is important to understand a few things about how an automatic transmission works.

There is fluid that goes through the 4L60E that has three jobs:. Motor oil is only responsible for lubrication and cooling and is changed way more than transmission fluid.

Tranny fluid is one of the most neglected items of vehicle maintenance. Here is a good write up on low transmission fluid signs. This is a good writeup on taking care of a tow vehicle. It will have no overdrive and no first. The first thing that I would check is whether or not is is getting power from the ECM, and whether it is sending a signal back to it. If you find that your vehicle is vibrating at highway speed, this is often caused by a loose torque converter.

That is either the torque converter or harmonic balancer. It is pretty easy to diagnose. Good thing these engines have rev limiters! It can be a pretty scary feeling. And, the clutch pack is done in by the piston. There is a giant rubber O-ring around the piston that will shrink due to heat and age. Nearly everyone is going to have to take it on in for a rebuild.

Replacing the clutches in an automatic transmission is not a job that is easily done whatsoever. There is a lot that can get messed up in the 4L60E. This is also a pretty common issue with the 4L60E. More than likely the reverse input snap ring has sheared or snapped off. It can also be caused by the sun shell breaking. The most common problem is probably going to be the low reverse clutch pack. The booster valve could also be an issue. Many people will bring their vehicle in and complain that the transmission is shifting really hard between first and second gear.

This is another really common problem with the 4L60E. Good Luck! While travelling kl ph the transmission shifts from OD through the gears all the way down to low then to neutral. It should also have started to feel a little weird for a bit before it failed. Is it possible that the engine was revving fast when reverse was engaged? Alternatively, was the vehicle moving forward?

The 4L65E utilizes 5-pinion planetaries, along with a hardened input shaft, that boosted torque capacity to ft. The nice thing about all of this is that the 5-lug parts are easily swapped into the 4L60E, leaving you with the ability to upgrade your existing tranny without having to buy a new unit.

Replacing the planetary carriers requires a full teardown. If you have never done this before, this may not be the time to start. This is not the most difficult tranny to build but it is certainly not the easiest. And there are a few specialized tools needed to correctly complete the job.

That's a helluva lot of pressure in a tank that would be made to fit in that car. Imagine what a collision tank explosion might be like. It would probably leave a crater in the road! I wonder if all the car's parts are biodegradable too? I have that same concern. I figure it won't be long after they are sold that they are in accidents, then we can see what happens to them.

While I like the idea of being able to drive miles for less than I used to go miles when I was 17, I won't be an early adopter of this. I want to see what happens in an accident first. In all honesty, the tank will probably be the strongest part of the car. I drove 4 different vehicle with alterative fuel, 2 natural gas at psi and 2 propane at about psi and never had a worry.

Your likely to see far more vehicles by ratio explode with gasoline that prssurized air or even natural gas. I like the idea and am gonna watch for them when they come out Since it has to pass US safety laws to be sold here, I have no doubt it'll be a safe car, but I'd still like to see what happens in a wreck. Usually that part goes bad. With the tranny on the ground apply air to the system and the reverse piston engages. Installed I got no reverse. If if just "freewheels" without any engine braking you have a problem in the low reverse clutch. The rubbing sounds could be the sun shell rubbing the case.
