The 4L60E transmission is the direct descendent of the R4, and as such already had over a decade of refinement put into it before it ever even made it into production.

This means that even the early ones were pretty good from day one of their production life. While there have been many case changes and internal changes throughout the years.

Ok, time to stop rambling. Lets get into 4L60E problems and how to troubleshoot them. It is important to understand a few things about how an automatic transmission works.

There is fluid that goes through the 4L60E that has three jobs:. Motor oil is only responsible for lubrication and cooling and is changed way more than transmission fluid.

Tranny fluid is one of the most neglected items of vehicle maintenance. Here is a good write up on low transmission fluid signs. This is a good writeup on taking care of a tow vehicle. It will have no overdrive and no first. The first thing that I would check is whether or not is is getting power from the ECM, and whether it is sending a signal back to it. If you find that your vehicle is vibrating at highway speed, this is often caused by a loose torque converter.

That is either the torque converter or harmonic balancer. It is pretty easy to diagnose. Good thing these engines have rev limiters! It can be a pretty scary feeling. And, the clutch pack is done in by the piston. There is a giant rubber O-ring around the piston that will shrink due to heat and age. Nearly everyone is going to have to take it on in for a rebuild.

Replacing the clutches in an automatic transmission is not a job that is easily done whatsoever. There is a lot that can get messed up in the 4L60E. This is also a pretty common issue with the 4L60E. More than likely the reverse input snap ring has sheared or snapped off. It can also be caused by the sun shell breaking. The most common problem is probably going to be the low reverse clutch pack. The booster valve could also be an issue. Many people will bring their vehicle in and complain that the transmission is shifting really hard between first and second gear.

This is another really common problem with the 4L60E. Good Luck! While travelling kl ph the transmission shifts from OD through the gears all the way down to low then to neutral. Quite a quick stop and engine red lines as torque converter still locked up. Started gradually then got worse over next 50 kls then started down shifting right away after stopping then starting again. When cold will work for 5 kls then start downshifting on its own.The Jalopy Journal. Terms of Service. Privacy Policy.

This is the first of a long line of questions I'm sure as this is my first rebuild, but hopefully someone can help me out. I pulled my Low-Reverse clutch pack and reinstalled a new one, but the thickness does not match what my Haynes manual says it should be.

I dont know the history of this transmission, nor have I done this transmission rebuild before so I really dont know if a spacer plate is missing or not. The manual says the clutch pack thickness laid out on a bench should be 1.

I know spacing plates are available, but before I buy one I need to know if this thickness includes the low-reverse clutch assembly roller clutch, inner race which is measuring right at 1. Thanks guys and gals! Do you have the same number of steel and friction plates in it as it had originally?

You adjust the whole stack with the selective spacer. RetrorodSep 18, This is how my grandpa taught my dad, and my dad taught me. Oh and obviously make sure you have the reverse piston and springs in there. You can also just air check that unit and watch it to see what your clearance is. Good luck.

Having no reverse can be a tricky issue, especially if you happened to park against a wall. Below we will cover the most common problems that cause reverse to fail.

4L60E Transmission Problems

Typically, when any of the clutch packs wear out, they begin to drop debris in the transmission pan. If you are an observant person you might be able to help yourself identify which problem caused the 4L60E to lose reverse.

The clutches in an automatic transmission wear just like the simple clutch of a manual transmission. When they go out it often leaves a putrid smell. It should also have started to feel a little weird for a bit before it failed. Is it possible that the engine was revving fast when reverse was engaged? Alternatively, was the vehicle moving forward?

If so this can cause the sun shell to fail. Those are the primary reasons that the 4L60E fails in reverse. It could be something else, but not nearly as likely as one of the reasons listed above. Good luck fixing your transmission.

No reverse is very common in the 4L60E. Diagnosing No Reverse If you are an observant person you might be able to help yourself identify which problem caused the 4L60E to lose reverse. Conclusion Those are the primary reasons that the 4L60E fails in reverse. The descendent of the R4, the 4L60E trans has a long history of backing up some fairly potent motors.

InGM started using the 4L60E in all rear-wheel drive cars, until when performance demands had increased beyond its current capacity, and it was replaced with the 4L65E. The 4L65E was built on the same platform as the 60, but with a few differences. The 4L60E uses 4-pinion planetary carriers, these carriers are rated to ft. The 4L65E utilizes 5-pinion planetaries, along with a hardened input shaft, that boosted torque capacity to ft. The nice thing about all of this is that the 5-lug parts are easily swapped into the 4L60E, leaving you with the ability to upgrade your existing tranny without having to buy a new unit.

Replacing the planetary carriers requires a full teardown. If you have never done this before, this may not be the time to start. This is not the most difficult tranny to build but it is certainly not the easiest. And there are a few specialized tools needed to correctly complete the job.

Inwhen the 4L60E was introduced, the R4 was renamed 4L This is important as while they share some parts, they are different transmissions. This type of lockup circuit offers a smoother transition as it pulses the signal instead of all at once.

The important thing to remember here is that the tranny type, PWM or non-PWM, must match the computer in the car, otherwise it will not function properly. Since the upgrade requires a complete teardown, a full rebuild, with a few extra performance pieces, is a good idea. There are a few areas that require special attention and are commonly overlooked.

The Pump Pressure Relief is the 1 cause of failure after overhaul. It is very easy to forget this little ball and spring, but it tends to get gummy and starts sticking. For this rebuild, we used several kits. We cherry picked the clutch kit, using the Z-pack for the gear clutches. These are specifically designed to not bow and have superior holding power. The Red-Oxide clutches have better hold for Another piece that is a must in any high-performance transmission, is a beefy sun shell gear.

It is integral in 2 nd and reverse application. The stock parts have a tendency to sheer off the gear at the neck in high-performance applications. This unit is made of overall thicker material and includes a new thrust washer. Here is the meat of the conversion, the 5-pinion rear planetary. In high-performance applications, the rear planetary carrier carries all the stress.Air car to be sold in the US. Some Frenchie is going to be selling air cars in the US, with a 96MPH top speed, a mile range and a 2 hour recharge time, for less than 20 grand.

Bad thing, it looks like a Smart car. If they are selling it here, means they will be able to meet US safety regs. I can see getting one or two of these as commuters, because it would cost almost nothing in electricity to recharge the tank compared to what the same range in gasoline is costing me now.

If this car is what they claim it is, AND it takes off in the US, it'll break the stranglehold foreign oil has on the US within just a year or two. I'm guesstimating that a mile tank would cost maybe 10 bucks in electricity, at most, and one could buy a few solar panels and a small battery bank to provide that.

That's very cool. But, it says the air tank is 4, psi!?! That doesn't sound right at all.

4L60E Transmission Problems

That's a helluva lot of pressure in a tank that would be made to fit in that car. Imagine what a collision tank explosion might be like. It would probably leave a crater in the road! I wonder if all the car's parts are biodegradable too? I have that same concern. I figure it won't be long after they are sold that they are in accidents, then we can see what happens to them.

While I like the idea of being able to drive miles for less than I used to go miles when I was 17, I won't be an early adopter of this. I want to see what happens in an accident first. In all honesty, the tank will probably be the strongest part of the car. I drove 4 different vehicle with alterative fuel, 2 natural gas at psi and 2 propane at about psi and never had a worry.

Your likely to see far more vehicles by ratio explode with gasoline that prssurized air or even natural gas. I like the idea and am gonna watch for them when they come out Since it has to pass US safety laws to be sold here, I have no doubt it'll be a safe car, but I'd still like to see what happens in a wreck. And with a mile range, an air compressor and a plugin is all you'll need. Even if it takes 8 hours to recharge, after driving just miles it's time for a hotel room anyway.Pretty self explainatory.

Reverse not even engaging. Tore down the tranny and replaced the clutches and reverse piston seals. Still I got nothing. Sunshell looked good.

Not cracked or broken.

Usually that part goes bad. With the tranny on the ground apply air to the system and the reverse piston engages. Installed I got no reverse. Tranny is a stock 99 model so it is better than the earlier versions. Does anybody know what I missed. I am going to remove the valve body again to make sure nothing is clogged but forward gears are working fine. Really fustrated at this point.

In reverse it acts as neutral. How to make sure of that. I replaced all the seals and soft pads inside the case.

There is also a rubbing sound that is going on. Almost sounds as if it is coming from the oil pump. If I were to guess the vanes inside the oil pump. I am baffled. I have done a couple of these transmissions thru the years as friends needed help and this one has got me stumped Check for 1st gear engine braking by shifting the trans into 1st gear as you are traveling at a reasonable speed in 2nd. Say mph downshift to low and you should feel the downshift ,the engine rpm go up, and the car should decelerate.

If if just "freewheels" without any engine braking you have a problem in the low reverse clutch. The rubbing sounds could be the sun shell rubbing the case.

700r4 (4L60) Low-Reverse Clutch Pack Question

The sun shell tangs get spread out from being driven by the reverse input drum. IF they are spread out the sun shell needs to be replaced. It could also be a torrington bearing. I'll ask him and let you know 2marrow.

Yes it is the same trans that a 95 PU would use, however ALL ranges must have a functioning pump to drive, an auto trans functions off of hydraulic pressure and without it the trans will not engage any gear. You either misunderstood your trans builder or he 1. I will have to go back thru the manual to find where this torrington bearing is The sun shell looked good.Part exactly what they said it it was arrived in great condition on time. I ordered this part from another vender they sent the wrong part global was punctual and sent the right part and good quality in a timely manor very good vendor.
